HelloGMOs Project Abstract

Walking through the aisles of the grocery store, you may see many logos advertising anti-GMO, or genetically modified organism, products. Fear of GMOs, although unsubstantiated, is widespread in American society. Katherine Norden and Sydney Nader worked to assemble a list of recipes that use genetically modified food organisms as ingredients into a recipe blog with supplemental scientific material regarding the sourcing and benefits of GMOs. The website, manifested through the Wix website editor, contains breakfast, lunch, snack, dinner, and dessert selections that use accessible genetically modified ingredients. The website approaches genetic modification in food, which has often been demonized or referred to negatively, and scientifically simplifies the definitions, benefits, and concerns regarding genetically altered foods.

Recipe Bank

HelloGMOs functions as a recipe bank. Similar to a cooking website or a food blog, all recipes have been tried out and photographed, but the recipes were found on other sites and cited. HelloGMOs aims to give proper credit to these other cites and amplify their craft as well as pro-GMO ingredients.

University of Maryland DCC Honors Capstone

Katie and Sydney are students at the University of Maryland's Design Cultures and Creativity Honors College. As a culminating capstone project, DCC students assemble projects that encapsulate their interests through creative, multimedia, and even team-oriented creation. As Katie and Sydney are chemical engineering students, they decided to combine their love of science and biology with a creative aspect of cooking and web design in order to bring about change for those who learn from HelloGMOs.
